Aideen Doran in Dhaka
In June and July, Aideen Doran is undertaking a research residency in Bangladesh in association with the CCA. She is working as artist in residence at Britto Arts Trust in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Here, in the fastest growing city in the world, she is continuing her research into the international garment trade, and the shift of mass production from the West towards low-wage economies, where wages are minimal and worker’s protections non-existent. This shift has helped to create the illusion of the information economy, which professes that economic production has become dematerialised - when manual and mechanical production has instead become invisible, taking place in export processing zones like those on the outskirts of Dhaka. For more information on Britto Arts Trust, please see their website.
Aideen Doran (b. 1984) studied at the University of Ulster and the Glasgow School of Art, and is currently based in Glasgow. She has exhibited across the UK and Ireland, and will participate in Momentous Times at the CCA this autumn. Doran’s residency at Britto Arts Trust is generously supported by the British Council NI, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, under their Professional Arts Abroad Award.
