The Centre for Contemporary Art Derry~Londonderry (CCA) is seeking an individual to join the team as Gallery Assistant through the Jobstart scheme open to 16–24 year olds who are currently unemployed, not in education or training and not in receipt of benefits.

The Gallery Assistant will play a key part of the CCA team and will receive training to support CCA across a range of duties, including duty managing the CCA building and creating a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors to CCA. As the front of house and representative of CCA, a polite, professional and friendly demeanour is essential to the role. There will be some lone working and a practical approach to keyholding, operations, health and safety and willingness to communicate with a wide range of audiences about contemporary art is essential.

The Gallery Assistant will support the CCA team as required including researching and assisting across marketing, public programmes and administration including stock-taking. They will receive on-the-job training in art handling during exhibition changeover and building management.

SALARY: 16/17yrs £5.28, 18/20yrs £7.49, 21/22yrs £10.18, 23/24yrs £10.42 per hour.

HOURS OF WORK25 hours per week: Wednesday 11:30am–18:30pm, Thursday 14:30–18:30, Friday 11:30am–18:30pm, Saturday 11:30am–18:30pm – there will be some flexibility with occasional evening and weekend events.

DURATION OF POST: 6 month post

PLACE OF WORK: CCA Derry~Londonderry, 10–12 Artillery Street, Derry~Londonderry, BT48 6RG, offsite on occasion.

Purpose of post:

  • Keyholding locking and unlocking CCA premises
  • Acting as front of house, first point of contact for the public and hirers; responding to enquiries and requests in appropriate, professional manner
  • Invigilate artwork; protecting fragile work from harm or theft, condition reporting
  • Cleaning when necessary
  • Undertaking visitor surveys as required
  • Collecting footfall data
  • Collating visitor information for reporting
  • Assisting with exhibition installation and deinstallation when required
  • Handling cash through donations and sales, cashing up and record-keeping
  • Assisting with the safety of staff and visitors in the gallery
  • Assisting with preparation and support during public events
  • Compiling schools workshop packs and maintaining Family Activity packs
  • Communicating the ideas behind artworks and events clearly to a wide range of visiting public
  • Assisting with research for exhibitions, funding applications, marketing, procurement and more.

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL
