Info

For the next booksvscigarettes reading group session in CCA, we’re going back to basics with an excerpt about carnival and the carnivalesque from Mikhail Bakhtin’s classic, ‘Rabelais and His World’. Related to our current exhibition, ‘Smiling, Sweating and Resisting’, the readings will introduce Bakhtin’s influential ideas about popular-festive laughter, folk humour and the grotesque.

This event is free and open to everyone and there’s no preparation required. Please email info@cca-derry-londonderry.org to let us know you’re coming so we can have enough texts printed for everyone.

booksvscigarettes is CCA’s intermittent reading group. It takes its name from George Orwell’s essay which assessed the price and value of reading against other pursuits.
