Update from PhD Researcher Lucie McLaughlin

Nichibunken

This month, CCA’s collaborative PhD researcher Lucie McLaughlin travelled to Kyoto, Japan, where she has been awarded a 3 month research fellowship at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken) supported by UKRI/AHRC International Placement Scheme. Established in the late 1980s, Nichibunken helps to develop international, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive research on Japanese culture. Her research there aims to reveal how art activates history in both a familiar place (N Ireland) and an unfamiliar one (Japan).

In August, Lucie presented ‘There are images and those that make them:' tonalities of research at the Centre for Contemporary Art, Derry~Londonderry’ at the Word Image and Social Dynamics conference at University of Amsterdam. Using images from research at the CCA as compositional anchors, the presentation aimed to explore interdisciplinary writing in connection to contemporary art, via poetics, history, theory and fiction.
