Patterns

(The Falling Figures and other stories)

Patterns (The Falling Figures and other stories), an installation by the artist Praneet Soi, will open Friday 27th October at 7pm.

Living and working between Amsterdam and Kolkata, India, Praneet Soi often develops work through an intuitive understanding of his social, economic and cultural landscape. One of his continuing concerns is the casting of a personal narrative over politicised subject matter. This installation is presented across CCA’s three gallery spaces and is the artist’s most significant presentation in Ireland and the UK to date.

The exhibition will include recent paintings and a newly commissioned sculpture. A video work incorporating the artist’s documentation of the Smyth & Gibson luxury shirt factory in Derry and the Mughal Minto Album at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin is mapped to play on a specially designed curvilinear wall. Included within this body of works is Srinagar – on loan from the Van Abbemuseum collection – an extensive installation of wall-based drawings/texts and 47 papier-mâché tiles meticulously hand-painted with experimental motifs and patterns by the artist and Kashmiri artisans.

Patterns (The Falling Figures and other stories) is generously supported by the British Council, the Mondriaan Foundation, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. With special thanks to the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, and Smyth & Gibson, Derry.
