📦 CCA x Jerwood = Supports: An Introduction to Art Handling: With Corrie Masson, MA Conservation of Fine Art 📦 Tuesday 24 September 2024, 1–4pm 📍CCA Derry~Londonderry Join us for ‘An Introduction to Art Handling’, a training session with Corrie Masson. This workshop will outline the major do’s and don’ts when it comes to handling works of art, as well as practical and affordable tips for their handling, display and storage. We will consider a range of artworks including paintings, works of art on paper and sculpture. The workshop will benefit emerging artists who may not have access to specialist art handling companies and who want to learn how to minimise the risk of damage to themselves and their artworks. It may also be of interest to those wishing to pursue a career as an art technician. No prior knowledge is required. It is suited to those aged 18 and above. This opportunity is for artists who are not currently in any type of formal education who have begun their professional practice, based nationally or internationally. 🍁 Embodied Earth: Soft Play//Hard Clay with Gail Mahon 🍁 Saturday 21 September 2024, 1–3pm 📍CCA Derry~Londonderry Join artist-researcher Gail Mahon for an immersive workshop that blends playful interactions with gravity and clay. This is part of the Public Programme for the current exhibition ‘Strata’. During the workshop, clay and soil serves as a material lens to amplify the feel of darkened somatic spaces and modes of non-verbal communication. You will move through processes of improvisation, proprioceptive sensing through touching, carrying, balancing, weight sharing, and sculpting space to formulate unique expression of intensive play to locate moments of stillness and bodily communication. Everyone is welcome, movements are adaptive and scalable to include most people and diverse needs, suitable to those aged 18 and above. It is an indescribable feeling reminiscent of some of my most magical evenings.” Struck by a yearning desire and moving pace within this text by medb, Nessa chose to create a text work that is reflective of the wispy movements of memory. Evading concrete accompanying imagery, the work aims to offer its reader a moment of unbridled nostalgic fantasy to create or seek an ephemeral moment in their mind, short lived and tantalising....you can almost taste it. 🩷 medb is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, and musician - born under the sign of Taurus, raised in Lisburn. She holds a BA from ECA, an MA from CSM, and the title of CEO of her own self-published art and fashion rag Thumb Suck Girl. Her work primarily concerns love, death, and every nostalgic notion in between. 💚 Berlin based, Irish artist Nessa Finnegan explores a wide spectrum of established roles and rules, authority and power in her visual art practice. Engaging in collaborative processes to create immersive installations featuring video, soft sculpture and text based work. Nessa’s work maintains a healthy dose of voyeurism, humour and discomfort. This project is made possible thanks to support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Derry City & Strabane District Council and Art Fund. 🥚 Testing Ground: ‘Eggshell Breaking Point Theory’ with Sinéad Smyth 🥚 Sunday 1 September 2024–Monday 30 September 2024 📍CCA’s Project Space We’re excited to welcome artist Sinéad Smyth to CCA’s Project Space for the month of September as part of Testing Ground, an initiative that enables artists to try out new ideas and take risks with their practice. Sinéad’s project will be in two parts, with the artist working independently and with the community, gathering young people from The Churches Trust for workshops, and the public in an open workshop within the historic walled city 🤲 The open workshop, taking place on Thursday 19 September 2024 from 6:30pm–8:30pm, will consist of a draw and paint en plein air, capturing the lines and shapes of Derry city. Together, the public will draw using eggshell chalk, made by the artists and participants of the workshops. 👋 And that’s where you come in! To make the eggshell chalk, we’re asking for your eggshell donations. Kathryn used the residency as an opportunity to explore new ideas and experiment with fresh approaches following a recent four week lithography workshop at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque 🗺️ Kathryn’s time in the Project Space has enabled the artist to playfully engage with composition, collage, and conceptual elements in a white wall gallery setting 🖼 Each week, the walls have featured a rotating collection of new works, reflecting this evolving process. Each work is a unique, hand-printed lithograph created in New Mexico. ~~ Testing Ground is an initiative that is part of CCA x Jerwood = Supports programme; an artist participating in each Crit Group is invited to take their work-in-progress forward with a month in CCA’s Project Space 🤝 Testing Ground aims to encourage experimentation and taking risks through realising work in its early stages with access to an audience. ~~ @kathryn_graham_ @jerwoodfoundation @whatsonderrystrabane 👋 Over the past few weeks, you may have noticed something a little different about our entrance. As part of our current exhibition ‘Strata’, artist Marie Farringdon has transformed CCA’s doors as part of the artwork ‘[y] Channel in halves (cross polarised / plan polarised)’ 🌱 Thresholds play an important role in ‘Strata’, and this vinyl installation transforms the very threshold of the CCA gallery. Reuben’s design uses monochromatic fluorescent pink for its cultural connections with the LGBTQ+ community. The image shows bodies in embrace, exploring ephemeral energies of space, bodies and identities. 👋 Emma Brennan is an interdisciplinary artist who works predominantly in performative practices to include multi-media installation, moving image and collaborative processes. Based between Belfast and Dublin. 👋 Reuben Brown is an emerging visual artist and curator currently based in Belfast, specialising in 3D-CGI (computer-generated) animation and filmography, interactive and experiential installation and performance. Eibhlín will facilitate a workshop for children and families where you will make your own fossil reliefs in clay. During the workshop, Eibhlín will ask you to work with clay, pressing a selection of natural materials into the clay’s surface, making a natural relief 🌿 The imprints will dry and become an earthy fossil. To close off the day, I’ll finish with sharing a couple of excerpts from Junichiro Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows. It’s an incredible piece on the appreciation for everything delicate and nuanced in the domestic, namely shadows and light. He depicts his vision of Japanese culture through detailed descriptions of colours and hues of objects like lacquered dishes and food, moments when light softly hits them and shadows distribute tenderly around the room. There’s a range of different styles, techniques, experiments with different surfaces. A bit on the detail of the first picture, I wanted to make up the shadows and light with yellow and green mainly because of my fascination with the long green shadow casted on the yellow wall in Czapski’s ‘Train de Banlieue’, along with an interest in how to capture the feeling of dawn with one blocked in, fake looking yellow- similar to Fauvists who often used unrealistic hues of paint squeezed straight out of the tube. I wanted to fill the remaining space with painterly gesture that could also be read as abstract. Loose, wet, unblended brush marks built up and broken down, pushed and pulled to animate the space.
