"Should artists write?" – Writing workshop – 2021 edition
Thursdays 7, 14, 21 January 2021, 6pm–8pm
Writer Meadhbh McNutt returns to CCA~Derry~Londonderry to deliver Should artists write? in January 2021.
During this three-part workshop, participants will engage with selected critical texts, participate in writing activities and discuss work produced. Throughout the workshops, Meadhbh shares ideas and examples with you to create a network for exchange and discussion.
The first session takes Peter Osborne’s Anywhere or Not at All as a starting point to ask: “What is art writing? And to which canon does it belong?” We look at the turn towards conceptual art in the 1960s and 70s (focusing on Sol LeWitt’s Sentences and Adrian Piper’s 1987 letter to Donald Kuspit). Texts by art writer Maria Fusco and theorist Susannah Thompson will be discussed.
The second session examines the appeal of transdisciplinary writing and the difficult matter of artistic autonomy, with texts from writer Chris Kraus, and artist-writers Hito Steyerl, Hannah Black and Aria Dean. Participants are encouraged to choose a writing exercise of their choice, and prepare an open-ended response for the third session.
Taking the lead from Aria Dean’s quote, “…writing to understand something, and making work to test an idea”, the final session invites you to share your work among the group and reflect on key questions.
This is a ticketed event, at a cost of £25 for three two-hour online sessions. The workshops will take place on Zoom. An invite and texts will be emailed in advance. Places are limited and booking is essential here for this Public Programme event.
** This event is now fully booked. Please email our Public Programmes Curator Laura McCafferty on [email protected] to be added to the waiting list.**
