Artist Paola Bernardelli will be the first artist to takeover CCA Derry~Londonderry's Project Space in 2024 with Everything is Fragile*, a research and development phase of a project that weaves of connections between the French Nouvelle Vague, the Dutch Golden Age and the idea of estrangement in the current historical context.

The second stage of the project will take place in Amsterdam in April 2024.

* In a poignant scene in the French movie Au pan coupé by Guy Gilles (France, 1968) the main character ruminates on life: “Jean, tout est fragile” (Jean, everything is fragile).

This project is supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and by Derry City & Strabane District Council Artist Practitioner Award.

Paola Bernardelli’s practice is lens-based and stems from her background in Photojournalism and Visual Anthropology. She has experimented with research and production methodologies based on archival investigation paired with fieldwork research, focusing on exploring forgotten histories that slip through the fabric of history. Recently her practice has veered towards a more introspective approach, linking the personal to the collective. A fascination with the idea of compulsive quests for solitude has led her to researching personal accounts of alienation and displacement through history.

Bernardelli’s work has been exhibited locally and nationally, as well as in Canada, Italy, Spain, Iceland. Her most recent work And no one else was exhibited at Wild Tulips Derry in 2021 and Things We Know In The Night And Cannot Name In The Morning was published in Abridged (viewable here).

Recent solo exhibitions also include Who is Balbo? Down with Balbo!, Hàskòlatorg, Reykjavìk, 2018; More Men Than Columbus, Verbal, Derry, 2016; Lay Devotions And Flawed Recollections, LICA, Winnipeg, 2016. Recent group exhibitions include #1, Wild Tulips, Derry, 2019; The Colder The Air, SÍM Gallery, Reykjavìk, 2017; Future Artist Maker, The Exhibition, Nerve Visual Gallery, Derry and UltraLab, Madrid, 2016; Tomorrow’s Almost Over, Void Derry, 2013.
