We're excited to present the next artist as part of CCA Introducing, Glasgow-based artist Lydia Davies, who took over our Instagram on Thursday 19 October 2023. To coincide with the takeover, Lydia also presented a sound work, Dog hairs, on site in our shop and online on this webpage to coincide with the takeover.

CCA Introducing is a series of takeovers by early-career artists, with each artist nominated by an artist or curator who has previously taken part in CCA programmes or exhibitions. Lydia has been nominated by CCA's Digital Coordinator, Cecelia Graham.

Across the takeover, Lydia introduced her work giving an insight into her multi-disciplinary practice which spans moving image, voice, sound, and bookmaking. You can find Lydia's publication New Sheets at CCA's shop here.

CCA Introducing is supported by Art Fund.

Dog hairs, 2020

The voice recounts a series of interconnected vignettes of conversations, thoughts and encounters. These segments are formed out of forgotten objects, bits of debris, receptacles and cavities, and draw on the bodily experiences of the narrator – a sideways glance, an object reached for at a stretch, the gravitational pull as they run down a slope. The pace of the voice drags and tightens against percussive and instrumental rhythms, and occasionally snags on a phrase in the flow of speech.

Lydia Davies is an artist and writer based in Glasgow, working with moving image, voice, sound, and bookmaking. Lydia is preoccupied with interpersonal dynamics, bodily gestures, and the shifting registers of voice and narration.

Through storytelling, her audio-visual work and handmade books tend to the personal, latent, and overlooked. Details become gateways to larger scenes of affect, where elastic selves find and lose shape through repeated and revised linguistic and visual motifs.

Lydia’s polyvocal approach to writing underpins her scripts, short stories, essays, and live readings. She was the recipient of the John Calcutt Prize for Critical Writing in 2021. Writing commissions in 2023 include projects with ho.rr Collective, Glasgow Project Room, and Intermedia Gallery. Earlier this summer she was artist-in-residence at CCA Glasgow, and broadcast a new radio commission with David Dale Gallery.
