CCA Introducing: Liv Preston
On Friday 17 September 2021 from 10am, follow artist Liv Preston as she takes over our Instagram and Twitter pages to share her work and research for CCA Introducing 2021. CCA Introducing is a series of 24 hour social media takeovers by emerging artists. Each artist has been nominated by an artist or curator connected to CCA. The recommendation to invite Liv to participate in CCA Introducing came from artist Ryan Gander, who was part of CCA Derry~Londonderry's Make every show like it’s your last 2014 solo exhibition.
Born in Keighley (1993) and growing up in Bradford, West Yorkshire the material language and attitudes of this landscape has heavily influenced Liv's practice. Combined with an obsessive interest in gaming, the subterranean and publications such as 2000AD, the practice manifests primarily as a combination of sculpture and conceptual gestures. Collections of objects/spaces are identified and mined, their specificity and contexts employed as material. Heavily influenced by game design display mechanisms and gestures are often used to manipulate the works. For example series of works may appear as inventories or access to the works may be problematised. Often these forms of display resist/chew on traditional ways of installing artworks and the politics surrounding these gestures. They may imply mischief or danger in their presentation and deliberately undermine themselves of their environments.
Liv will be sharing some of the archival images from her research/personal collection of publications about subterranean exploration. These primarily are from a collection of British caving/potholing journals and guides into exploring cave systems.
