Time is speeding up and slowing down simultaneously. Individually and collectively we attempt to make sense of these collisions to find a new rhythm. CCA’s reading group booksvscigarettes will move to Twitter on Friday 27 March 2020 at 1pm, delivering one line daily of The Machine Stops. E.M. Forster’s 1909 novella describes a time when human life can no longer live on the surface of the Earth. Individuals live in isolation pods deep under the ground. The supercomputer ‘The Machine’ that they rely on for all human needs suddenly stops.

booksvscigarettes is CCA Derry~Londonderry’s intermittent reading group. It takes its name from George Orwell’s essay which assessed the price and value of reading against other pursuits.
